A traditional software vendor ships the same product to everyone and lets the customer adapt. An FDE goes the other way. An insurer buys an AI claims assistant; an FDE from the vendor sits with the claims team, learns their forms and exceptions, connects the assistant to their systems, writes the prompts and evaluations for their cases, and feeds what they learn back to the product team.
In episode 14 at 29:58, MongoDB’s Rachelle Palmer credits Palantir with the model and contrasts it with the slow cycle of specs, alignment, beta and release. The FDE’s job, she says at 30:22, is to build whatever is useful as quickly as possible, starting from a thin working core. Episode 14 was sponsored by Galileo, whose CTO co-hosts it (0:22).
Guests also name the costs. In episode 49 at 26:25, Intercom’s Fergal Reid describes hand-engineering a prompt for each customer as the forward-deployed model: accurate quickly, but it leaves a different prompt per customer and becomes technical debt. Intercom chose a standardized system it can test and improve for everyone. Episode 49 was sponsored by Galileo; the read is at 28:52. In episode 75 at 51:35, WisdomAI’s Kapil Chhabra argues that FDEs can’t settle what a company’s own terms mean, because they are outsiders; someone inside has to decide. The interview was sponsored by WisdomAI, whose offices hosted it (0:52).
The editorial takeaway: FDEs speed up the first deployment and surface real requirements, but they don’t replace a product that generalizes or a customer who owns its own definitions. See also AI pilot and context layer.
Hear it from the guest
“You put engineers on the ground with the customer or the organization, and their mission is to build whatever is useful and works right then as quickly as possible.”
“No amount of forward deployed engineers can do that because at the end of the day, they are external to the organization.”
