What is Data Warehouse?

Data Warehouse

A data warehouse is a central database built for analysis rather than day-to-day transactions. It collects cleaned, structured data from many business systems on a regular schedule so analysts, dashboards and increasingly AI agents can query it in one place.

Also known as: data warehouses, data warehousing, enterprise data warehouse

The everyday database behind an app is tuned for many small reads and writes: place this order, update that address. A warehouse is tuned for big questions across lots of history: what were sales by region for the last three years, and which products were returned most? To answer those quickly, data is copied in from many systems, usually through ETL pipelines, and stored in tidy, documented tables with agreed definitions.

Modern cloud warehouses such as BigQuery, Snowflake and Amazon Redshift rent out storage and computing separately, so a team pays for the queries it runs. A data lake is the looser cousin: it keeps raw files of any type, while a warehouse holds structured data shaped for analysis. Lakehouse platforms try to combine the two.

For AI, the warehouse is often where trusted business numbers live. A text-to-SQL assistant or analytics agent that answers “how did revenue change last quarter?” is only as good as the warehouse tables and definitions it queries, which is why semantic layers sit on top of many warehouses.

Guests on the show stress that one warehouse rarely holds everything. In episode 75 at 35:12, WisdomAI’s Kapil Chhabra says enterprises “do not have all their data stored into a single database or a data warehouse.” Episode 75 was sponsored by WisdomAI (sponsor thanks at 4:13). In episode 14 at 5:44, MongoDB’s Rachelle Palmer lists the business intelligence and data warehouse layer among the systems a legacy-app modernization has to account for. Episode 14 is a Season 2 episode sponsored by Galileo; its co-host is Galileo CTO Atindriyo Sanyal (intro at 0:22).
