ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Siri and Alexa are all sold as assistants, and so are tools built into email, documents and customer service. The common thread is a person asking for help in plain language and getting it back. Today’s assistants are usually built on a large language model; older voice assistants relied more on fixed intents and rules.
“Assistant” is a product word rather than a technical one, so it overlaps with neighbors. A chatbot is defined by the conversational interface. An AI copilot is an assistant embedded in a specific work tool. An AI agent is defined by acting: choosing steps and using tools toward a goal. Many assistants now do some of this, which is why a Google DeepMind-led report defines advanced AI assistants as agents with natural-language interfaces that plan and carry out actions for a user (Gabriel et al.). The names blur in industry too: in episode 7 at 3:00, Twilio’s Vinnie Giarrusso explains that “we actually call them Twilio AI assistants,” while “the industry term is, is agents.” Vinnie describes Twilio’s use of Galileo, the show’s sponsor at the time, at 14:00.
What an assistant can safely do depends partly on what it can reach. One that can only answer from its training data can’t take actions outside the conversation, though its answers can still mislead; one connected to your calendar, inbox or payment systems also needs clear permissions, confirmations and human-in-the-loop checks. In episode 63 at 44:25, Yutori’s Dhruv Batra recalls predicting, when he left Meta, a world where “every single interaction with the digital and physical world is mediated by an AI assistant,” his own forecast rather than a settled outcome. For getting better results from one, see how to brief an AI assistant.
