Think of the difference between knowing a language’s grammar and being able to hold a conversation. Someone with AI fluency can, for example, hand a coding assistant a clear task, spot when its output is wrong, break a big job into steps an agent can handle, and decide which parts still need human judgment.
In this glossary, AI literacy is the broader baseline: understanding what AI is, what it can’t do and what risks it carries. We use fluency for the hands-on practice. Frameworks overlap: Dakan, Feller and Anthropic’s AI Fluency Framework combines delegation, describing work, assessing outputs and taking responsibility for how AI is used. This glossary’s literacy-versus-fluency distinction is a teaching aid, not a universal standard.
Why it matters
As AI tools spread through everyday work, teams increasingly treat fluent use as a job skill to hire for, train and evaluate, rather than a personal hobby.
On the podcast
In episode 36, ChatPRD founder Claire Vo argues that engineering career ladders, from junior engineer to CTO, should include it: “I think we need to add AI fluency into that list” at 20:23. That is her recommendation, not an industry standard. Galileo sponsored episode 36; the sponsor mention is at 42:24.
In episode 59, Superhuman’s Loïc Houssier says his team still needs engineering fundamentals but is working out how to evaluate this skill in interviews: “But how to test AI fluency is something that we’re still figuring out” at 43:13. Galileo was the presenting sponsor of season three, which includes episode 59; the episode’s show notes carry the sponsorship.
